There are 18 consonants in the Tamil alphabet.

Consonants can be categorised into hard, medium and soft consonants.

வல்லினம் - hard consonants

இடையினம் - medium consonants

மெல்லினம் - soft consonants

It's easy to spot a consonant. All consonant letters have a dot on top. Consonants never appear at the beginning of a word. They only appear in the middle or at the end of a word.
